Your sound card couldn’t be initialized. What does the windows device manager say? Is the sound card entry ok?

Best would be, if you could post a directx logfile.

In Windows: Start > Run > dxdiag > Ok > ‘Save all infos’

Additionally take a look here, how to post more useful infos:

Have you reinstalled or updated the sound card driver?

The DirectX Diagnostic log is reporting a missing file and is suggesting to reinstall DirectX. The latest version of DirectX for WinXP is 9.0c.

If you have a sound card and not afraid to open up your computer, make sure that the sound card snugly fits in the slot. Also, try the following

1. Control Panel (Category View) > Speech Sound & Audio Devices Icon > Sounds & Audio Devices icon
-or-
1. Control Panel (Classic View) > Sounds & Audio Devices icon
2. Audio tab
3. in ‘Sound playback’ make sure the ‘Default device:’ drop-down box correctly reflects your sound-chip/sound card. You may want to do the same for the Voice tab.
4. Apply button > OK button
5. close out of Control Panel
6. close Windows and restart/reboot the computer

1. Winamp
2. Ctrl+P (for preferences)
3. Plug-ins > Output
4. double click ‘DirectSound output’
5. Driver tab
6. make sure the device in the drop-down list correctly reflects your sound card
7. close out of Prefs > close Winamp > close Windows and restart the computer.

Still no luck? Windows seem to be having troubles recognizing the sound card, so this is more of system problem than a Winamp problem. A couple good forums for general tech support are Tech Support Guy and Suggest A Fix. Although they are not affiliated with or endorsed by Nullsoft/Winamp, they have been commonly suggested here at Winamp Forums.

In any case good luck

I am not sure of what else to tell you. Maybe a HijackThis log will help one of us see what is going on. However, you said that you had to reinstall Windows, so your system may be clean and the HjT log may not reveal any possible «red flags» (if not there).

Are you using a sound card or «built in» sound chip? Computers with a sound chip, will often have a setting in the BIOS that allows you to enable or disable sound chip. If using a sound chip, then maybe it was inadvertently disabled in the BIOS. Because, BIOS will vary from computer to computer we can’t tell you how to get into yours and make the necessary change. However, getting into the BIOS setting usually done by holding a key at start-up and which key is usually shown on the screen at start-up.

I would suggest that you try contacting the customer support of you computer provider or manufacturer .

Additionally to all, what has been said before, I sadly must say, that sometimes a stage has been reached, where we simply cannot help anymore.

You have a massive issue with the detection or with the driver of your sound card. The possible solutions are very complex and figuring out, what exactly goes wrong is very difficult.

I can remember the trouble I had with my father’s system, the damn onboard sound had no installer for the driver, you had to manually install it. Even if you did it, it always said, that it couldn’t find some files. It was a pain.

General hardware issues are really hard to track down, in the end, a Windows reinstall probably will do the trick. *shrugs*

All I still can think of is, that you do what JM said, sometimes it also can help, if you disable the onboard soundchip in Bios, boot Windows and re-enable it in Bios again. If it’s a sound card, remove the card from your pc, boot Windows and plug it in again after you’ve shutdown Windows.

Doesn’t matter, which of both is the case, you should uninstall anything, which sounds like audio driver, from the Windows control panel first.
